State Profile
About Abia
Abia State was created on August 27, 1991, from the former Imo State. Located in the South-East geopolitical zone, it is bordered by Imo State to the west, Enugu and Ebonyi States to the north, Akwa Ibom State to the east, and Rivers State to the southeast. The state covers approximately 6,320 square kilometers and is home to over 4 million people, almost entirely of Igbo ethnicity.
The state's economy is anchored by two distinct centers: Umuahia, the administrative capital, and Aba, the commercial and industrial hub. Aba is widely recognized as Nigeria's largest informal manufacturing cluster, with thousands of SMEs producing textiles, footwear, leather goods, and plastics. The city earned the nickname "Japan of Africa" for its entrepreneurial manufacturing culture. Under Governor Alex Otti, the state has prioritized infrastructure rehabilitation, power sector reform through the Geometric Power plant, and SME financing. However, the state continues to grapple with security challenges related to the broader South-East separatist agitation, including the controversial Monday sit-at-home orders.
