About Akwa Ibom
Akwa Ibom State was created on September 23, 1987, from the former Cross River State. Located in Nigeria's South-South geopolitical zone, it is bordered by Cross River State to the east, Rivers State and Abia State to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The state is named after the Qua Iboe River and is home to approximately 5.5 million people, predominantly of Ibibio, Annang, and Oron extraction.
As Nigeria's leading crude oil producer, Akwa Ibom contributes significantly to the federation account. However, the state government under the ARISE agenda has pursued aggressive economic diversification into agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing. The state capital, Uyo, has undergone significant urban transformation, with modern road networks, an international airport, and the Ibom Deep Seaport project currently under development. The state is also known for its vibrant cultural festivals, including the annual Christmas Carols Festival, which holds the Guinness World Record for the largest congregation of carol singers.
