Bayelsa State, created in 1996 from Rivers State, is located in the heart of the Niger Delta. With approximately 2.5 million residents across just 8 LGAs — the fewest of any Nigerian state — it is one of the country's most geographically compact yet politically significant states. Bayelsa is the ancestral home of the Ijaw people and the birthplace of former President Goodluck Jonathan. Despite producing enormous oil wealth, the state faces severe underdevelopment, environmental degradation from decades of spills and gas flaring, and high youth unemployment. The riverine terrain, with its vast network of creeks and mangroves, makes infrastructure development uniquely challenging. Politically, Bayelsa is overwhelmingly PDP. The 2019 governorship election, which saw the APC's David Lyon initially declared winner only for the Supreme Court to overturn the result, remains one of Nigeria's most dramatic electoral episodes. Governor Douye Diri's administration focuses on infrastructure, maritime security, and environmental remediation.

Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is the current governor, sworn in on February 14, 2020, following a Supreme Court ruling that nullified the election of David Lyon of the APC.
Bayelsa is the home state of former President Goodluck Jonathan and is one of Nigeria's major oil-producing states. Despite its resource wealth, it remains one of the least developed states due to decades of environmental degradation and underinvestment.
Bayelsa has an estimated GDP of $4.6 billion, driven almost entirely by oil and gas production. The state produces a significant portion of Nigeria's crude oil but has limited economic diversification. Fishing and subsistence farming remain important for rural communities.
Bayelsa suffers from chronic oil spills, gas flaring, and environmental degradation from decades of petroleum extraction. The UN Environment Programme estimated it would take 30 years and $1 billion to clean up Ogoniland alone. These environmental crises have devastated fishing and farming livelihoods.
Bayelsa State has 8 Local Government Areas — the fewest of any Nigerian state. They include Yenagoa, Brass, Nembe, Ogbia, Southern Ijaw, Ekeremor, Kolokuma/Opokuma, and Sagbama.
Bayelsa is solidly PDP. The party controls the governorship and all three senatorial seats. The APC made a brief breakthrough in 2019 when David Lyon won the governorship, but the victory was overturned by the Supreme Court. The state remains one of the PDP's strongest strongholds.
