State Profile
About Cross River
Cross River State is one of Nigeria's original twelve states, created in 1967. It was significantly restructured in 1987 when Akwa Ibom State was carved out of its western territory. Located in the South-South geopolitical zone, Cross River shares borders with Cameroon to the east, Akwa Ibom to the west, and Benue State to the north. The state covers approximately 20,156 square kilometers and is home to over 4 million people.
The state's economy has historically depended on tourism, agriculture, and services. Calabar, the capital, was a major pre-colonial port and served as the capital of the Oil Rivers Protectorate. Today, the state promotes itself as Nigeria's premier tourism destination, anchored by the Obudu Mountain Resort, the Drill Rehabilitation Centre, and the famous Calabar Carnival. However, the loss of oil-producing territories to Akwa Ibom in 1987 has created persistent fiscal challenges. The proposed Bakassi Deep Seaport and Calabar Free Trade Zone represent major infrastructure bets aimed at economic revitalization.
