About Benue State
Benue State was created on February 3, 1976, and is widely known as the "Food Basket of the Nation" due to its exceptional agricultural productivity. The state is named after the Benue River, one of Nigeria's largest waterways, which flows through the state and provides water for extensive irrigation farming. The capital, Makurdi, is an important agricultural trading center and hosts both Benue State University and the Federal University of Agriculture.
The state is ethnically diverse but dominated by three major groups. The Tiv people form the largest group (approximately 60% of the population) and are concentrated in the northern LGAs including Gboko, Katsina-Ala, Vandeikya, and Logo. The Idoma people are the predominant group in the southern senatorial district (Oturkpo, Ado, Okpokwu, Ohimini), while the Igede people are also concentrated in the south (Oju, Obi). This ethnic geography creates distinct political dynamics between the Tiv-majority north and the Idoma/Igede south.
Economically, Benue State is Nigeria's leading producer of yam, cassava, soya beans, and sesame. The state also produces significant quantities of rice, oranges, and mangoes. The famous Benue oranges are sought after across Nigeria. Despite this agricultural wealth, the state faces significant challenges including the devastating impact of herder-farmer conflicts that have displaced over 1.5 million people, inadequate infrastructure for food processing and storage, and high youth unemployment. The state government is working to attract agro-industrial investment to move beyond raw commodity production.

Benue State: Common Questions
Answers to frequently asked questions about Benue State's politics, elections, demographics, and governance.
What is the population of Benue State?
Benue State has an estimated population of approximately 6 million people, making it one of the most populous states in Nigeria's North Central geopolitical zone. The population is divided roughly 60% Tiv (concentrated in the north), 25% Idoma (in the south), and 10% Igede (also in the south), with smaller ethnic groups making up the remainder. The state capital, Makurdi, has a metropolitan population of approximately 500,000.
Who is the current Governor of Benue State?
The current Executive Governor of Benue State is Hyacinth Alia of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was elected in the 2023 governorship election, defeating the PDP candidate and ending 8 years of PDP rule under Samuel Ortom. Alia is a Catholic priest who transitioned to politics, campaigning on a platform of security restoration, infrastructure development, and anti-corruption. His administration has the difficult task of addressing both the humanitarian crisis from years of conflict and delivering tangible development to the people.
What is the capital of Benue State?
The capital of Benue State is Makurdi, located on the southern bank of the Benue River. Makurdi is one of Nigeria's most important agricultural trading centers, serving as a hub for the distribution of yam, soya beans, cassava, and oranges produced across the state. The city is home to Benue State University and the Federal University of Agriculture, making it an important educational center. The Makurdi Inland Water Port on the Benue River provides river transport connections to the Niger Delta.
What are the major ethnic groups in Benue State?
Benue State has three major ethnic groups. The Tiv people form the majority, comprising approximately 60% of the state's population and concentrated in the northern senatorial district (Gboko, Katsina-Ala, Vandeikya, Logo, Ukum, Kwande, Konshisha, Katsina-Ala). The Idoma people are the second largest group, found predominantly in the southern district (Oturkpo, Ado, Okpokwu, Ohimini). The Igede people are also concentrated in the south (Oju, Obi). Smaller groups include the Etulo, Ufia, and Akweya. The Tiv dominance in population and politics is a recurring source of tension with the southern groups.
Why is Benue State called the Food Basket of the Nation?
Benue State is called the "Food Basket of the Nation" because of its exceptionally fertile soil and high agricultural productivity. The state is Nigeria's leading producer of yam, cassava, soya beans, and sesame, and is among the top producers of rice, oranges, and mangoes. The combination of fertile alluvial soils from the Benue River basin, adequate rainfall, and a relatively flat topography makes the state ideal for large-scale farming. However, the state's agricultural potential has been severely hampered by years of herder-farmer conflicts that have displaced hundreds of thousands of farmers and destroyed farmland.
How many local government areas are in Benue State?
Benue State has 23 local government areas (LGAs), divided across three senatorial districts. Benue North East has 9 LGAs (Katsina-Ala, Konshisha, Kwande, Logo, Ukum, Vandeikya, Gboko, Tarka, Buruku), Benue North West has 7 LGAs (Guma, Gwer East, Gwer West, Makurdi, Agatu, Apa, Gboko), and Benue South has 7 LGAs (Ado, Obi, Ogbadibo, Ohimini, Oju, Okpokwu, Otukpo). The large number of LGAs reflects both the state's large population and the political imperative to distribute administrative units across the major ethnic zones.
