About Nasarawa State

Nasarawa State was created on October 1, 1996, from the western part of Plateau State. It is one of Nigeria's youngest states and one of the most ethnically complex. The state is known as the "Home of Solid Minerals" due to its abundant mineral resources including baryte, limestone, marble, tantalite, and cassiterite. The capital, Lafia, has grown rapidly since the state's creation and now serves as an important administrative and commercial center.

The state is ethnically diverse with the Eggon people being one of the largest indigenous groups, concentrated in Nasarawa Eggon, Akwanga, and parts of Lafia. The Mada people are found in Akwanga LGA, while the Alago people dominate Obi and Keana LGAs. There are significant Hausa-Fulani communities throughout the state, particularly in Keffi, Karu, and Lafia. The Gwandara and Bassa peoples are also present. This diversity creates a complex political landscape where no single ethnic group dominates.

Economically, Nasarawa State combines agriculture and mining as its primary sectors. The state is a major producer of sesame, soya beans, yam, cassava, and maize. The mining sector, while largely artisanal, contributes significantly to the state's internally generated revenue. The state's proximity to Abuja (Nigeria's capital) has created a rapidly growing commuter corridor along the Keffi-Abuja highway, with Karu LGA effectively becoming a suburb of Abuja. This geographic advantage brings both economic opportunities and challenges including rapid urbanization without adequate planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nasarawa State: Common Questions

Answers to frequently asked questions about Nasarawa State's politics, elections, demographics, and governance.

What is the population of Nasarawa State?

Nasarawa State has an estimated population of approximately 2.5 million people, making it one of the smaller states in Nigeria by population. However, the state's proximity to Abuja means that its actual daytime population is significantly higher due to commuters and traders. The state has experienced rapid population growth in recent decades, particularly in Karu LGA which borders the Federal Capital Territory.

Who is the current Governor of Nasarawa State?

The current Executive Governor of Nasarawa State is Abdullahi A. Sule of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was first elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2023. Before entering politics, Sule had a distinguished career in the oil industry, serving as Group Managing Director of the African Petroleum Corporation. His private-sector background has shaped his approach to governance, with a particular emphasis on revenue generation and public-private partnerships.

What is the capital of Nasarawa State?

The capital of Nasarawa State is Lafia, located in the southern part of the state. Lafia has experienced rapid growth since Nasarawa was created in 1996, transforming from a small town into a bustling state capital. The city serves as the administrative center and hosts the Nasarawa State University (NSUK). Lafia is also an important agricultural trading center, particularly for yam, soya beans, and sesame produced in the surrounding areas.

What are the major ethnic groups in Nasarawa State?

Nasarawa State is ethnically diverse with no single dominant group. The Eggon people are one of the largest indigenous groups, found in Nasarawa Eggon, Akwanga, and parts of Lafia. The Mada people are concentrated in Akwanga LGA. The Alago people dominate Obi and Keana LGAs. The Gwandara people have communities in Lafia and Toto. There are also significant Hausa-Fulani populations throughout the state, particularly in Keffi, Karu, and along trade routes. This diversity makes Nasarawa a microcosm of Nigeria's ethnic complexity.

What is Nasarawa State known for economically?

Nasarawa State is known as the "Home of Solid Minerals" due to its abundant mineral deposits. The state has commercially viable quantities of baryte, limestone, marble, tantalite, cassiterite, and tourmaline. However, most mining is artisanal and poorly regulated. Agriculture is equally important, with the state producing significant quantities of sesame, soya beans, yam, cassava, and maize. The state's proximity to Abuja has also created a booming real estate and service sector along the Keffi-Abuja corridor, making Karu LGA one of Nigeria's fastest-growing urban areas.

How many local government areas are in Nasarawa State?

Nasarawa State has 13 local government areas (LGAs): Akwanga, Awe, Doma, Karu, Keana, Keffi, Kokona, Lafia, Nasarawa, Nasarawa Eggon, Obi, Toto, and Wamba. Despite having only 13 LGAs — one of the lowest counts in Nigeria — the state covers a significant land area. Karu LGA is by far the most populous due to its proximity to Abuja, while Wamba and Keana remain predominantly rural. The distribution of LGAs has been a source of political tension, with calls for the creation of additional administrative units.
