State Profile
About Ekiti
Ekiti State was created on October 1, 1996, from the old Ondo State. Located in the South-West geopolitical zone, it is bordered by Kwara State to the north, Kogi State to the east, Ondo State to the south, and Osun State to the west. The state covers approximately 6,353 square kilometers — making it one of Nigeria's smallest states — and is home to approximately 3.5 million people, almost entirely of Yoruba extraction.
Ekiti's most distinctive characteristic is its exceptionally high educational attainment. The state has produced more university professors per capita than any other Nigerian state, earning it the nickname "Fountain of Knowledge." Despite this intellectual capital, the state remains predominantly agrarian, with cocoa, kolanut, and plantain as major crops. The economy faces challenges from its landlocked position, limited industrial base, and significant youth migration to Lagos and Abuja. The state government has prioritized education infrastructure, rural road networks, and agricultural value-chain development as key policy pillars.
