State Profile
About Osun
Osun State was created on August 27, 1991, from the old Oyo State. Located in the South-West geopolitical zone, it is bordered by Oyo State to the west, Kwara State to the north, Ogun and Ekiti States to the east, and Ondo State to the south. The state covers approximately 9,251 square kilometers and is home to over 4.7 million people, almost entirely of Yoruba ethnicity.
The state's identity is deeply intertwined with the Osun River and the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, Nigeria's only UNESCO World Heritage cultural site. The annual Osun-Osogbo Festival draws thousands of visitors and worshippers globally. Beyond tourism, Osun has a strong educational profile, hosting Obafemi Awolowo University (one of Nigeria's most prestigious institutions), Osun State University, and numerous colleges. The state economy depends on agriculture (cocoa, palm oil, cassava), services, and government employment. Politically, Osun is a bellwether for South-West elections, with extremely tight contests in 2018, 2022, and anticipated for 2027.
